Matthias Jaissle has issued an apology to Newcastle United fans after their Coventry City capitulation.
However, the German head coach has pushed back against comparisons to the Leeds United loss.
The Magpies have now lost two consecutive away games 4-1, both equally as damaging and embarrassing. The results have led many to seriously question the manager’s tactics and approach.
“Of course, we can only apologise to the fans. They took a long journey and deserved a better result,” said Jaissle.
“We tried our best. I just explained it. I think we need to improve, especially in both boxes, because they are in the end the games are decided.”
He continued: “I think it was a tough story throughout the whole match. I think you need to be also realistic and analyse the situations and the game in detail. I think there were elements where we can see improvements, and on the other hand, there were elements, especially in both boxes, when we need to step up and when we need to improve.
“These margins are deciding games.
“If you’re going through that match, you’re going into the match with an approach to dominate the game and get the three points. Then the penalty happened by a mistake. That’s football, and the second goal as well. It’s difficult still to digest because, in my eyes, it was a clear foul on Willock.
“And small margins are deciding games.”
While Jaissle accepts the unacceptable nature of the results, he does think his side were better in the second hammering, opposed to the first.
He at least believes his side creating more chances is an uplift.
“I need to see the statistics, but I didn’t have the feeling, and it’s not something we can compare with the Leeds match today because I think we were at least better in that,” he said.
“And again, the goals we conceded, I went just through it. I think it was a different story. We were better, especially after the first ten minutes. We were in the game. We dominated the game.
“But again, we conceded too many goals, and this is something which we can control. We need to improve that definitely, and on the opposition box the same. If you create so many chances, which was an improvement already, you need to finish it and get the reward out of it.”
