Matias Fernandez-Pardo has revealed his preferred position in Matthias Jaissle’s new-look Newcastle United XI.
Speaking to the club social media channels the 21-year-old forward, signed for around £51million on deadline day from Lille, says he prefers to play through the middle, opening up the prospect of Fernandez-Pardo playing both as a no.9 or even in the no.10, were it his choice.
Due to his skillset many believed the Belgium international would operate off the left in Jaissle’s side - and he may well yet do - given his similarities to now Barcelona forward and former United man Anthony Gordon. The attacker is expected to make his debut when Bournemouth come to St James’ Park on Saturday lunchtime (12.30pm KO).
“I can play across the frontline. Still I do have a preference to play more central,” said Fernandez-Pardo.
“But I’m someone who just wants to help the team out. I’ll do everything I can for the team, but certainly, if I could play down the middle, that would be my preference.”
The player added: “I’ve been following the team’s matches - I’ve seen a team that is very ambitious, that wants to attack, get forward, really chase teams and go after them. That’s really something I want to take part in, as well.”
Head coach Jaissle admits he’s excited to get the deal over the line - and can’t wait to see Fernandez-Pardo, nicknamed MFP, in black and white.
“I am very happy to welcome Matias to our club. We were all delighted when we knew we could complete this deal,” he said.
“Matias is a highly technical player with explosiveness in his game. He can score and assist, he has courage, and he has the ability to take players on. We’re sure our supporters will enjoy watching him play.
“He has already shown in Lille that he can perform on the big stage, and we will work closely with him to keep developing his game further. We are excited to see him in a Newcastle United shirt.”
